“Why Did I Come into This Room? – Tech version

September 6, 2022 by Lynne Hoeksema Leave a Comment

You know how I love to write a post every now and then about a topic that has virtually nothing to do with grieving, grief support or even the infamous Christian walk. Not because I don’t believe those topics are vitally important.  I do – they make up the lion’s share of this ministry.

But…I do love the occasional detour into frivolous or even comedic territory to give all of us a break from any deep thought.  It’s just one more service I provide! 😊

Which brings me to today’s post.

I would guess virtually everyone over the age of, say, 30, has walked into a room and then wondered, “Why am I here?  What was I going to do?  Or get?”  Then the typical pattern is that we walk back to where we had just been, hoping that something there will jog our memory and send us back into that same room.  For me, I quickly take care of the task at hand so that I don’t have to make multiple trips back to the idea origin.

Who’s with me on this?

I know I’ve done it for years, and now that I am a woman “of a certain age,” it’s become a bit more frequent.  And more concerning!  Getting easier to question if I’ve started to lose it.

So, let’s introduce the technology world into this scenario.  And specifically, the smart phone and/or tablet.  Multiple times a day, I go to one of my apps, probably mail or Facebook or Safari or messages, and plan to take care of something that just popped into my head.  Easy peasy.  Open the app, send the message, check the emails, scroll through Facebook, search the internet, and then move on to the rest of the day.

Not so fast.  I have barely walked into the “message room,” for example, and I’ve already been sidetracked because some notification popped up.  Or one of my apps reminded me of something else I wanted/needed to do.

And within a matter of seconds, literally, I’ve completely forgotten the original intent.

And, bad news, there’s no “room” to walk back into with the hopes that the memory will be jogged.  Add to that the fact that the number of distractions is exponentially higher than that of walking into a physical room, and we’re quickly hopelessly lost!

I know there is a healthy debate as to the pros and cons of technology, and specifically our smart devices.  I can see both sides of that argument.  But seriously, do we really need one more way to be reminded of our forgetfulness?

But on the “pro” side – we can forget why we went into that “room,” from the comfort of our lounger.  Ain’t life grand?

That’s it this week.  Short and sweet-ish.  I’m not even going to dishonor God’s Word this week by trying to find a scripture that that speaks into this situation.  We’ll look for something with a little more meat next week.
