There’s a song by Tauren Wells that’s been playing recently on my Christian radio station and I am drawn to the message and the power of the song’s chorus. The song is “Take it All Back” and talks about the spiritual battle that is waging all around us. Ephesians 6 clearly talks about how we are to put on the armor of God (actually God’s armor) to battle the forces of evil around us.
In Wells’ song, he is exhorting us to “take back what the enemy stole.” In John 10:10, we read, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.”
So yes, Satan’s goal is to steal all that God intends for us. Maybe it’s our peace or our joy, or our trust in God, or even the last vestiges of our faith. We don’t passively fight this battle. And we surely don’t fight it alone.
Before I go further, take a listen to the song – at least through the chorus – if you’re not familiar with it. Or need a shot of battle adrenaline!
I don’t agree 100% theologically with some of the lyrics (we humans can’t command angels, and “the gates of hell” is only referenced when Jesus says those gates won’t prevail against God’s Church.)
But what I do love is the fact that we are truly in a battle, and not recognizing that doesn’t alter the fact that Satan is after our destruction.
Don’t you feel it? I’ve had countless conversations over the past months about how broken this world is, and how it just feels like so much is falling apart. On a personal level, we all have demons that steal our joy and peace in ways designed to defeat each of us.
As the song says, the answer lies in one name, “JESUS!” Yes, he’s already won the battle but we are still fighting on the battle field of our lives.
What makes this chorus feel so powerful to me? These lyrics: “With the power of the Holy Ghost, I’m taking back what the enemy stole.”
It’s not our measly little strength. We are absolutely no match for the powers of evil. But we know who is. Satan is not God’s equal. He is the defeated enemy and in that, we should rest.
This post is not meant to discourage you. It’s to remind us all, myself included, of the reality of the battle raging around us, and for our souls. But “greater is he that is in me, [Jesus] than he who is in the world [Satan].”
We need to have a battle mindset. We can’t go at this passively and just hope that everything somehow fixes itself. Ignore it and it will go away. Highly unlikely.
If God had wanted us to meekly sit by and endure Satan’s destruction, he wouldn’t have given us his armor to take into battle.
So what’s your battle cry? What ways are you seeing your joy and peace stolen? Call it out for what it is. And then ask God to give you eyes to see Satan’s plans to destroy you. Ask God to lead you victoriously through your own battles.
Ask him to deliver to you his peace and his joy. No one wants you to be victorious more than our Conquering King, our Jesus!
For the Lord your God is he who goes with you
to fight for you against your enemies,
to give you the victory.
Deuteronomy 20:4
