Before I get too far down the practical, “how to” blog road, I want to share what God has been teaching me lately about the “why for” part of showing compassion to the hurting.
I can provide lots of lists that help you know what to say, what not to say, what to do and what not to do. And while those ARE helpful and I do plan to continue that practical side, they might still ring a little hollow if they’re said or done only out of a sense of duty.
I think what we all long for is a HEART of compassion to accompany those practical suggestions. So, how does that happen when we feel so very inadequate in our own strength? The weight of feeling like we do NOT have the gift of compassion, or the heart of a nurturer can paralyze us from stepping into that hurting friend’s world.
The answer is all about God and what HE can do. So, take yourselves out of the picture for now – and off the hook! None of us, even those who seem to have the gift of compassion, can adequately comfort someone in our own strength. So, don’t expect it to come naturally – and don’t put those unrealistic expectations on yourselves.
Let me share this powerful scripture with you.
But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me (2 Corinthians 12:9).
This text is clearly telling us to get out of the driver’s seat! I can’t even fathom how all-encompassing God’s perfect power must be. But, that’s what He promises us in our weakness. He’s really not looking for anything from us in this endeavor. He will do the work. Our part is to trust Him with that. And take that first step.
If you’re anything like me, you DON’T want to get out of the driver’s seat! I almost always want to do things in my own strength. How about you? Seems like a much more comfortable place to be, right? I’m even more comfortable in the REAL driver’s seat of a car! But I digress…
If you have ever stepped into a new job, or new responsibility, or relationship, or ministry, or calling that felt SO out of your comfort zone and consequently witnessed God’s power, then you have a jump start on this.
I have spent MUCH of this last year, and particularly with this ministry calling, in that position. I’m doing things that are definitely not in my wheel house and there are times I’m so fearful of what’s ahead, or how I can even do any of it.
And then God moves. It might be by bringing the right person into my life when I need their expertise. It might be (and almost always is) God’s blog ideas landing in my head “randomly.” It might be a time when I know God has spoken through me. Let me just say this – it’s a humbling experience to be used by the Almighty God!
That IS what He wants for us. His power, working through YOU, can accomplish anything. Just ask Him to do what He has promised He can. Then step out in faith and watch Him work. You will receive showers of blessings!
I’d love to hear examples of when you’ve seen God work in your life, when you were scared to step out in faith. Maybe your story will encourage someone today. Feel free to share in the comments section.
